Bergen Bar & Grill
About This Spot
Stepping into Bergen Bar & Grill is like being welcomed into an old friend’s comfortable, unpretentious gathering spot where the hum of quiet conversations and the occasional clink of glasses set an easygoing rhythm. Nestled in the heart of Windom, this bar and grill carries the warm, lived-in feel of a classic roadside retreat — the kind of place where time slows just enough to savor a meal and the stories shared across the table.
The atmosphere hums with a genuine warmth: not polished or flashy, but deeply inviting. On any given evening, you might find a mix of locals settling into their favorite booths and travelers who’ve made the journey just for the promise of a thoughtfully prepared steak or a basket of golden shrimp. The pace here is unhurried, allowing the conversation to steer the night as much as the food and drink do.
Speaking of food, Bergen knows how to treat a steak. The dishes arrive hearty and straightforward, often accompanied by rich, comforting sides that speak to the grill’s homestyle ethos. Whether it’s a ribeye smothered in mushrooms and onions or a perfectly cooked filet that’s shared between two, each plate invites you to linger and savor. And for those who prefer a surf-and-turf twist or a casual burger basket, the menu feels just as welcoming — generous portions meant to satisfy without fuss.
This is the kind of place where waiting an hour isn’t a chore but part of the experience, a testament to its steady charm and consistent kitchen. Even when the room fills, the staff moves with a friendly efficiency, making you feel recognized and at ease. On warmer days, the outdoor seating offers a relaxed alternative, letting you enjoy the fresh air as the energy of the bar spills out onto the patio.
Bergen Bar & Grill sits quietly proud, a gem for those who appreciate honest food and the unspoken comfort of community. Here, the joy comes not from flash or hype but from the simple pleasure of a well-earned meal and the company around it.

Absolutely worth the 1 1/2 drive to get there and the 1 hour wait to get inside. Without any doubt! Just do it!!! We questioned ourselves on the way down, but after that first bite, it was.... oh... ya... this is sooooo gooooddddd. Piping hot, and amazing! The best steak I have ever had. I am not a bid steak eater, and I do eat my steaks more done then I should, but , with that said, it was still so tender, covered in a beautiful combination of a beefy broth with butter and the wild rice was spot on! We had the onion rings and battered onion rings for apps, they were very good and crunchy. The rest of the table got salads, I got the chili. It was good, not great. Very tasty, very tomato-y, hamburger in small pieces and I ate it all. LOL My husband got the New York Strip, it was fabulous, and the king of the table was the queen cut prime rib! Holy cow, literally! It is a must eat. But to be honest, you can not go wrong with anything they have. My friend got the german patty melt, oh my, I am getting that next time. It had an inch of sauerkraut on top of the burger topped with mustard instead of thousand island. Her husband got the beef tips and he said they were good as well. Drinks come in Large Coke glasses just like a beer, thank you for that, I think its so the poor girls don't have to keep coming back. Boy do they hustle! All food is piping hot, and I mean hot! The fried onions I got with my steak were a definite get again, the mushrooms, I will probably pass on. Not that they were not good, they were, I just thought they would would of been seared like the onions, there were more sauteed/simmered in butter, with no sear. Good, but I couldn't eat what I had anyway, so less is better! It was cool so we sat in the car. But next time, we are going when its warm, going to go early and enjoy the weather, good conversation with old friends and friends we are yet to meet while we wait to eat the best darn food in Minnesota! Cheers! And great job Bergen! Very reasonably priced. 5 of us, apps, food, and drinks! OH BRING CASH, no CHARGE CARDS!

The shrimp are amazing! Steak tasted great but was a little fatty. Food portions are definitely worth the cost. Every thing tasted delicious. There is usually a wait time from my understanding, but we decided to eat outside and we got a table right away. Will be back again!

Thought about downgrading the atmosphere, but upon reflection it's the atmosphere that kind of makes this place. This place screams roadside bar and grill so it's doubly delicious when the steak comes out and it's as good as a $100 steak in the Twin Cities. A gem of a place. The staff were super cool, too. Also, I got to the restaurant at 5:05 PM on a Tuesday and the place was 3/4 full. They had been open 5 minutes. Let that sink in. By the time I left inside was full and patio was full and more people were pulling up. You have been warned.

I always go for the mushroom smothered ribeye, but the walleye is another fantastic option. We always leave happier than we arrived! Portions are very generous and the service is fast and friendly. They have outdoor seating in nice weather but during the winter it can be a challenge to get a table here. The restaurant can become very busy, and I've seen the wait approach an hour. You can enjoy drinks and appetizers on the deck while you wait for a table. Local cats will be for your leftovers! The best restaurant option in the area, by a long shot!

I've been hearing about this place for quite some time. We finally made it down there and we really enjoyed it. Don't let the look of the outside scare you away. It's a small hidden gem. Service was very nice and the pricing matches the food. Only thing that surprised me was that the shrimp was breaded and not grilled. Nothing wrong with it, just expected grilled shrimp with steaks like this. All around a good experience and I'll be back this summer on the bike.

This is the best restaurant experience I have ever had. It's a little out of the way, but they have the most wonderful melt in your mouth steak and the wait staff are awesome. Be prepared to wait in line starting around 4:30 for the opening at 5:00 and you'll have to pay with cash or check because they do not accept cards or electronic payment.

Went for lunch which is a totally different menu. It's an old style bar restaurant that the chains try and imitate but fail. The steak sandwich on Texas toast was excellent. Service was prompt. Word of warning Cash only restaurant
